Slay Stretch Marks

Slay Stretch Marks
In a day and age where we are shown perfectly photoshopped images of bodies, we forget that certain changes in our own bodies are completely normal.

Developing stretch marks can be very daunting, and often lower self-confidence in women. More than half of women who have stretch marks name them as one of the top features they would change about themselves. Roughly two out of three women would feel more confident, more attractive, or sexier if they didn’t have stretch marks.

What is a stretch mark and how do we get them?

Your skin has three layers, stretch marks are formed in the middle layer- the dermis. A stretch mark is a scar that appears when the skin is stretched too quickly. The abrupt change causes collagen and elastin, which supports our skin, to tear.

Although not everyone develops stretch marks, it is estimated that 50 to 70% of women have them. Developing stretch marks is completely normal. Some risk factors for developing stretch marks include:

  • Pregnancy
  • Rapid Weight gain
  • Hormones
  • Puberty
  • Genetics
  • Lack of collagen and elastin

So how do we get rid of stretch marks?

Considering the cause of stretch marks is tearing beneath the skin, it is impossible to eliminate stretch marks entirely, once you have them. Don’t completely freak out, there are steps you can take for prevention, which significantly reduce the appearance and severity of stretch marks.

What should I do to prevent stretch marks?

While there are factors, you cannot change that contribute to stretch marks, there are actions you can take to reduce the chance of getting stretch marks:

Hydrating your skin; keeping your skin hydrated can help. Soft skin doesn’t tend to develop stretch marks as much as dry skin does.

  • Collagen stimulating products
  • Eating healthy, to prevent fast weight gain.
  • Drinking water (hydration is key)

Once stretch marks have appeared, there are clinical treatments and at-home remedies that can lessen and decrease the appearance:

  • Exfoliating
  • Skin needling
  • Laser therapy
  • Spray tanning

The Bottom Line (pun intended)

There are numerous remedies on the market for stretch mark prevention and reduction, both at home and clinical treatments. Steer clear of products that claim to “get rid of stretch marks” as there is no way to 100% to eliminate them.
